The Power of Community: Celebrating Our Doula Village

Hey there, friend. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a doula, a birth worker, or someone deeply invested in the world of reproductive support. You know as well as I do that this work is heart-centered, soul-deep, and, let’s be honest, sometimes a little bit lonely.

We spend our days (and nights!) pouring into other families. We hold space for their fears, we celebrate their triumphs, and we provide that steady hand during the most transformative moments of their lives. But who holds space for us?

At Mama Doula Network, we believe that no doula should have to walk this path alone. That’s why we are so excited to introduce a new heartbeat to our weekly rhythm: "Cheer a Doula Friend" Friday. It’s more than just a social media trend; it’s a commitment to building the village we all need to thrive.

The Myth of the "Solo" Doula

In the business world, we’re often taught to look at others in our field as "competition." We’re told to protect our secrets, guard our clients, and build our own little islands. But in the doula world, especially for those of us leaning into our Latin-rooted identities and immigrant superpowers, this "lone wolf" mentality just doesn't sit right.

Many of us come from cultures where the "village" isn't a metaphor; it’s a daily reality. We grew up seeing aunts, neighbors, and grandmothers move as one unit to support a new parent. This is our cultural heritage. It’s in our DNA to collaborate, not to compete.

When we try to do it all alone, we burn out. We lose the joy in our practice. But when we lean into a community, we find that our individual lights actually shine brighter when they are part of a bonfire.

Why Our Community Needs a Village

The research is clear: community-centered care changes lives. When doulas are supported by a network, the families they serve see the benefits. We’ve seen that grassroots programs, those that prioritize culturally and linguistically matched support, lead to shorter labors, fewer medical interventions, and a massive reduction in birth-related anxiety.

But here’s the secret: the doulas in those programs are successful because they have a village behind them.

In a community like ours, a doula isn't just a birth worker. She is a resource navigator. She’s the person who knows where to find the best postpartum soup ingredients, which local practitioner understands the nuances of an immigrant’s experience, and who to call when a family is facing food or housing insecurity.

When we share this knowledge with each other, we aren't "giving away" our business. We are strengthening the entire ecosystem of care. We are ensuring that every family, regardless of their background, has access to the person-centered, respectful care they deserve.

Introducing: "Cheer a Doula Friend" Fridays

Starting right now, we’re dedicating our Fridays to shouting out the incredible work of our peers. Why? Because a win for one doula is a win for the whole movement.

Maybe it’s a fellow doula who just finished a grueling 24-hour birth and handled it with grace. Maybe it’s a colleague who just launched a beautiful new website or shared a recipe for a traditional postpartum tea that brought comfort to a client. Maybe it’s a birth worker who is advocating for better insurance coverage for doula services in their province.

Whoever they are, they deserve their flowers.

By cheering each other on, we do three things:

  1. We combat burnout: Knowing someone sees your hard work makes the long hours feel worth it.
  2. We build professional standards: By highlighting high-quality, evidence-based, and culturally respectful work, we raise the bar for everyone.
  3. We foster "Slow-Care": Instead of rushing to be the "best" or the "first," we take a breath and appreciate the beauty of the craft as practiced by our community.

Immigrant Superpowers: The Strength of Our Village

For those of us working as doulas in Canada who moved here from other parts of the world, our community is even more vital. We carry unique superpowers, resilience, bilingualism, and a deep understanding of what it means to build a life in a new place.

Sometimes, our "village" back home feels very far away. That’s why the Mama Doula Network exists: to be your chosen village here. When we support a fellow immigrant doula, we are helping her navigate the complexities of running a business in a second language or understanding the specific clinical landscape of Canadian hospitals.

We celebrate our cultural heritage by sharing traditions, like the Cuarentena or specific ways of providing comfort with fabric shaking, while bridging them with modern, evidence-based care. This bridge is stronger when more hands are holding it up.

How to Be a "Village" Member This Week

You don't need a formal title to start building your doula village. You just need a heart for community. Here are a few simple ways you can participate in our "Cheer a Doula Friend" initiative:

  • The Power of the Tag: Head over to Instagram and follow @mama_doula_canada. When you see a post from a fellow birth worker that resonates with you, tag a friend in the comments. Let them know why you appreciate their work.
  • Share the Knowledge: Did you find a great resource on ergonomics for labor support? Send it to a doula friend who’s been struggling with back pain.
  • The Referral Mindset: If you’re fully booked for a certain month, don't just say "no" to a potential client. Have a list of three or four doula friends whose work you trust and refer the family to them.
  • Collaborate on "Our Roots": Do you have a traditional recipe or a cultural practice that has been passed down in your family? Share it with the community! (Just remember, if you’re sharing specific techniques like traditional shawl support, ensure you’re doing so with respect to the cultural owners).

A Space for Everyone

Our village is big enough for everyone. Whether you are just starting your training and looking for a foundation, or you’re a seasoned pro focusing on the business side of things, there is a place for you here.

We believe in autonomy, not just for the families we serve, but for the doulas themselves. You are the expert of your own life and your own practice. Our role at Mama Doula Network is to provide the education, the framework (like the DIPPS standard), and the cheering section to help you succeed on your own terms.

Let’s Build This Together

The "Our Village" initiative is only as strong as the people in it. We want to hear from you. Who is a doula that inspires you? Whose work makes you feel proud to be in this profession?

If you’re looking to take your partnership with us to the next level, maybe you have an idea for a workshop, a cultural gift guide, or a collaborative project, we invite you to reach out. We are always looking for ways to build capacity and support one another’s growth.

Ready to join the movement?

  1. Follow us on Socials: Connect with us @mama_doula_canada to see our daily themes and join the Friday cheers.
  2. Partner with Us: If you’re a birth worker, educator, or business owner who aligns with our values of slow-care and culturally rooted support, please fill out our Partnership Form. Let’s see what we can create together.
  3. Spread the Word: Share this post with a doula friend who needs to know they are seen and appreciated.

The work we do is ancient, it is sacred, and it is necessary. But most importantly, it is collective. Let’s keep building our village, one "cheer" at a time.
